Stock Tools Home Page
Welcome to the Stock Tools home page. This project started
quite a while ago, and never really got off to much of a start. Some day, I hope to have more free time to devote to it. In the mean time, though, it remains vapor ware.
The goals of this project are:
- Provide individual investors and investment clubs with the
tools they need to make sound buy and sell decisions regarding their
securities portfolios. Most stock analysis software is aimed at
finding a "trading system", i.e., a system to buy and sell stocks over
a very limited period of time. Our software aims to help investors
make good long-term (5 years or more) investment decisions.
- Provide a well-engineered, free alternative to expensive
analysis tools. Tools for stock analysis are generally licensed to
individuals rather than investment clubs. As a result, only a few
members spend the money to get the tools, and the rest sit by the
sidelines. We'd like all members of the club to participate, which
can only happen with free software.
- Promote education about the stock market and investing.
All
of the initial developers of these tools are also active members of
investement clubs. We believe that education about investing is a
vital part of the mission of these clubs. These tools will be
designed to facilitate learning about stock analysis. In addition,
development of these tools provides the individuals involved with the
development of them with an education of our own.
- Have Fun! We also believe investing and investor education
should be fun.
As the project continues to develop, we may add additional services
to the software, such as portfolio management and club accounting.
However, those features are for the future. The first generation
tools will be aimed squarely at basic analysis. One of the goals
of this project is to accept input in the .ssg
file format used by the National
Association of Investors Corporation (“NAIC”) for their Stock
Selection Guide (SSG).
If this project's goals match with your own, and you're willing to
commit to assisting the project, we'd love additional volunteers.
Please go to the project page (listed below), and contact the project
with your offer of assistance. If you can program, great. If not,
there are lots of other jobs that also need doing, and you're welcome
to take on one (or more) of those.
This software will be released under the GNU public license for
software.
